Your Santa Monica Weekend Starts Here

Your Santa Monica Weekend Starts Here

Spring on the Westside has its own particular magic — longer golden hours, the Farmers Market at full bloom, the Pier humming with locals who actually live here. If you've been waiting for the perfect week to get out and soak it all in, this is it. Here's what's on my radar for the week of April 21 in Santa Monica.

Free Music at SMC — Tuesday, April 21

Kick off the week on a high note — literally. Santa Monica College is hosting **Masanga Marimba** in a free outdoor concert in the SMC Quad (1900 Pico Blvd) at 11:15 a.m. Led by CSU Northridge ethnomusicologist Dr. Ric Alviso, the ensemble traces the marimba from its roots in Zimbabwean music education to Latin American dance music. It's one of the few marimba groups in Southern California that fuse African and Latin traditions, and it's completely free. Bring a blanket, bring a friend — this one is a hidden gem.

Downtown Farmers Markets — Wednesday & Saturday

Two mornings a week, the Downtown Santa Monica Farmers Market is one of the best free things this city does. Wednesday's market runs along Arizona Avenue; Saturday's spills out near 2nd and Arizona. April means stone fruit is just starting to peek out, citrus is wrapping up, and spring vegetables are everywhere. Grab a coffee from one of the vendors and make an afternoon of it. This is the rhythm of Santa Monica at its best.

Live Music Fridays at The Surfing Fox — Friday, April 24

Every Friday night, The Surfing Fox on 3rd Street Promenade brings live music to downtown. It's the kind of low-key, neighborhood energy that makes Santa Monica feel like an actual town rather than a tourist destination. Walk the Promenade before or after — the spring evening air does not disappoint.

Taco Tuesday at The Whaler — Tuesday, April 21

If you haven't found yourself at The Whaler on a Tuesday yet, consider this your sign. Located at 101 Broadway, this weekly tradition is exactly what it sounds like — and exactly what you need on a weekday. Great tacos, good vibes, walkable from the beach.

Wine Tasting at Ester's Wine Shop & Bar - Sunday

Ester's Wine Shop & Bar runs weekly Sunday tastings that are worth building your afternoon around. It's the kind of intimate, curated wine experience that locals treasure and visitors don't always find. Drop in, try something new, and settle in for a conversation with people who actually know wine.

Santa Monica Conservancy Volunteer Appreciation Evening — Monday, April 27

Wrapping up the week with something that matters: the Santa Monica Conservancy honors its docents and volunteers at a special evening celebration hosted at the Annenberg Community Beach House (415 PCH), from 6 to 8 p.m. Even if you're not a volunteer, this event is a beautiful reminder of the people who care so deeply about preserving what makes this city worth living in. RSVP required.

What I Love About This Week

It's the kind of week that reminds you why you chose Santa Monica. Free concerts, open-air markets, live music on the Promenade, and a community that shows up for itself. Whether you're a longtime local or you're just starting to put down roots here, this week has something for everyone — and most of it is free.

If you're thinking about what it looks like to actually *live* in Santa Monica — the day-to-day texture of this place — I'd love to talk. This is my market, and I know it in a way that goes beyond square footage and price per foot.
